2008-2009 New Mexico Cyclocross Series

It’s cyclocross season again! The series has started good this year for me, with a first place in the B, CAT 3 / 4 race, at the first event. It was a great course, at Polk Middle School, and we had MUD! The first wet race I’ve seen in three years of the series here. I may have had an advantage in that race. While missed shifts and chain suck noises were growling all around, my Specialized Singlecross kept right on cranking. The muck that resulted from the mud, mixed with the fresh grass clippings, caused many racers to struggle with shift systems. I finished a minute ahead of 2nd, after lapping half the field of 20.
The 3rd race was in the dry sand at Mesa Del Sol. I led until the last two laps, when another single speed, a 29er MTB, passed me. Flotation in sand is an issue at MDS, and my skinny tires were no match for those fat tires on the MTB. After a stop to add air to the rear tire, I finished in 4th. And then I raced the A, ELITE/OPEN class, which started 15 minutes after my first race, which was 40 minutes long. We had about 12 racers ion the A race, and after a long 60 minutes of cranking the Singlecross, I finished in 6th place.
The next day, we raced at Ft. Marcy Park, in Santa Fe. This was our first course involving stair running. I got 3rd in the 3 / 4, and found some energy in a can of caffeine, and started the A. I did change my gear to a 22 on the rear, on the Singlecross; I was a little tired after cranking the 42×18 for the first race. A pack of about 20 started, and many dropped as the 60 minutes of sprinting progressed. I came in 11th, but was last after all the drops.
Mesa Del Sol again for race 5. This course was not singlespeed friendly, with a long down sloping start straight away. Maybe I’ve been doing something right this year, cause I went into the first turn in 3rd, on the Specialized Singlecross. Then I battled with the top three in the race, until crossing the line first at the end.
Mountain Flyer was at the 3rd and 4th races, and took some photos and put a great writeup on their website. Yes, they got BWR in there. http://www.mountainflyer.com/news.cfm?itemid=158
I’ll continue concentrating on the B, 3 / 4 race, for the series, but I’m enjoying the longer 60 minutes of pain with Open/Elite class.
